Frequently Asked Questions for Prospective Students

How long should my lesson be?
If you are a beginner, I recommend you start with 30 minute weekly lessons. More advanced students often choose to have 45 minute or 60 minute lessons, depending on their goals.

How much practice time do I need?
Whether you are an advanced player or a true beginner, it's important to practice daily. For true beginning players, it may only be 5-10 minutes each day. We will gradually increase your practice endurance. For more information, check out "How Much Should I Practice?" on my blog.

I'm just a beginner-- does it make sense for me to take lessons now?
Sometimes beginners aren't sure they are ready for lessons, but beginners are often some of the best students-- they haven't formed any bad habits yet! A beginner's initial goals may be learning how to hold the horn and get a good sound, or play Hot Cross Buns. As your playing progresses I can help you develop new goals.

What music do I need?
You'll need a few music books for our lessons. In total, they'll be about $30 and will last you at least 6 months. After our first lesson I will send you a list of suggested music books. Check out some music books I often use by visiting Music Books for Students.

So I have a horn and some music. Now how do I practice?
Students need an armless chair and a music stand. Visit my Resources for Students page for additional practice aid suggestions.

Where can I have my online lesson? In my kitchen?
Your online lesson can take place in almost any well-lit room, anywhere. A relatively small room with some non-hard surfaces (carpet, couch, etc) will help so the sound is not too live. For an optimal lesson, limit ambient noises such as background conversations. Learn more about set up for online lessons on the page of General Information.

What do I need for online lessons to work?
Please check out technical requirements listed under General Information.

How do I pay for my lessons?
Payments are pre-paid, just as they would be if you were signing up for a soccer team or a science class. Payments are made monthly or quarterly. For more information, visit Lesson Rates & Policies.

Can I try out a lesson with you?
I am currently offering one free mini-lesson for prospective students. Please contact me to set up your free mini-lesson.
